On this Vik to Katla Ice Cave tour, you’ll experience the magical allure of the Mýrdalsjökull Glacier, which is Iceland’s 4th largest! Also home to the famous Kötlujökull Glacier (Katla Glacier). Additionally, to add to the drama of the adventure, this area is also home to the illusive Katla Subglacial Volcano. This adventure promises a unique blend of excitement and natural beauty, making it a must-see for all nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

Vik to Katla Ice Cave Itinerary:

Your adventure begins in the charming village of Vík in South Iceland. The meeting location is on the backside of the Icewear Mall. Here, you’ll be greeted by a Gravel Travel Guide to go from Vik to Katla Ice Cave. Next, from here we journey to the magnificent Mýrdalsjökull glacier which sits on the edge of the Icelandic Highlands. This glacier is one of Iceland’s most iconic landmarks and the source of the captivating Kötlujökull Glacier, named after the formidable Katla volcano.

On the way up you’ll witness local historical spots and amazing 360 degree views. Many filming locations can be seen on the way up to this insanely vivid area, just ask your guide! As we venture deep into this historical icy wilderness, you’ll witness the breathtaking beauty of natural ice caves formed over centuries.

This glacier area and ice caves, hidden within the Katla Glacier, are a testament to the awe-inspiring power of nature. Our expert driver guides will ensure a safe and thrilling experience as you explore these unique geological formations. In fact, upon arrival, you’ll grab helmets and do a short 1-5 minute hike to the base of the ice cave. Then you’ll gear up with crampons and walk up a small hill to journey inside of the Katla Ice Cave. After you have time to experience and photograph the inside and outside of the cave you’ll gear down and walk back to the Gravel Travel truck. Lastly, you’ll head back to the town of Vik!

Meaning, we do not share this ice cave with other tour operators. We meticulously and safely maintain the Iceland ice cave by ourselves for you! Furthermore, we offer a shorter walk and a more intimate experience!

The drive from Vík to the Ice Cave is approximately 45 mins each way. The walk from the end of the road to the Ice Cave is approximately 10 mins. You will have approximately 1 hour at the Ice Cave.

Please note that this tour may not be suitable for individuals with fear of darkness or claustrophobia.

We recommend that you are able to walk 2 km on uneven ground and can climb a steep set of stairs with a rope assistance.

If required you must provide your own car seat. Per Icelandic LAW: Children under 135 cm must use a child car seat when travelling in a car. Taller children are free to use car seats as long as the car seat is intended for children of that height and weight. Children under 150 cm must not sit in front of an active airbag.
